Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about buying and selling premium seafood on SeaBid.
What is SeaBid?
SeaBid is an online auction platform for premium North Atlantic seafood. We connect Icelandic and Faroese suppliers directly with US buyers through real-time, transparent auctions powered by Basta.
How do the auctions work?
Suppliers list their seafood lots while shipments are in transit across the North Atlantic. Buyers browse available lots, view detailed specifications (species, grade, weight, origin), and place bids in real time. The highest bidder wins the lot.
What species are available?
Our auctions primarily feature Atlantic Salmon, Atlantic Cod, Haddock, and Halibut from Iceland and the Faroe Islands. Availability varies by season and supplier.
How is quality guaranteed?
Every lot includes full traceability data — vessel name, catch date, catch method, and handling chain. Shipments are temperature-monitored throughout transit and inspected upon arrival at the Portland Fish Exchange (PFEX).
What certifications do suppliers hold?
Our suppliers hold ASC, MSC, and equivalent national certifications. All processing facilities are HACCP compliant and EU health-certified.
How is seafood shipped?
Seafood travels via Eimskip refrigerated vessels at a constant -1°C. The 7-day ocean transit produces 94% lower CO₂ emissions compared to air freight. All shipments include GPS tracking and continuous temperature logging.
Where are shipments received in the US?
Shipments arrive at the Portland Fish Exchange (PFEX) in Portland, Maine, where they are inspected and staged for final delivery across the US.
Do I need an account to bid?
Yes. You need to register and sign in to place bids. Registration is free and gives you access to all active and upcoming auctions.
What payment methods are accepted?
Payment terms and methods are arranged directly between buyer and supplier after auction close. SeaBid facilitates the auction process and traceability documentation.
